Mrs William Novaks Kolaches

Total Time: 3 hrs 15 mins Preparation Time: 3 hrs Cook Time: 15 mins

Ingredients

  • 4 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 cup water, warm
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 4 cups flour, sifted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon mace
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2/3 cup shortening, melted
  • 5 cups flour

Recipe

  • 1 proof yeast with 1 t sugar and water.
  • 2 scald milk salt and sugar.
  • 3 add shortening
  • 4 let cool.
  • 5 add to yeast.
  • 6 add eggs mace zest.
  • 7 add 4 cups flour beat until smooth
  • 8 add more flour enough to make a smooth dough.
  • 9 cover let double.
  • 10 on floured board
  • 11 roll dough 1/2 inch thick.
  • 12 cut with round cutter.
  • 13 place on greased baking sheets
  • 14 brush with melted fat.
  • 15 cover and rise until light.
  • 16 make deep depression in center
  • 17 and fill with fruit filling(i have many recipes for fillings).
  • 18 let rise again.
  • 19 bake in400 degree oven.
  • 20 15 minutes.
